Health and Wellness

Health & Wellness is ultimately our choice to assume responsibility for our quality of life. It stems from a conscious decision and subsequent commitment to structuring a healthy lifestyle. It is a state of mind, a sustained pledge to adhere to this structure, in-spite of life’s challenges, and in so doing, achieve levels of well-being for which we can be proud. This form of personal engagement allows us to stay focused and achieve results, Season’s @ Integrated Health Clinic is here to support you in this undertaking.

Our immune system is a complex and amazing system that helps to keep us healthy and strong, protecting our bodies from the environmental stressors we encounter every day. However, we cannot take that system for granted. No matter what we do our immune system can be tested and we must be mindful of the fact that it too needs support. One of the best ways to keep your immune system strong is to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, however, life gets in the way and you are not able to sustain the intake of essential vitamins like beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and others necessary to sustain strong immune health. The educated use of supplements can help provide the additional level of support you need to achieve your optimal health goals. Season’s @ Integrated Health Clinic has a selection to help you.

Eat well...ward of bugs.

Healthy eating is a great way to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs. But, healthy eating has even more natural benefits. Healthy foods, such as vegetables, fruit, whole grain bread, pasta and cereal, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, garlic, and green tea contain antioxidants. But why is that important, well let's back up a bit.

As you age, your body tissue endures oxidative stress. Oxidative stress, or oxidation, occurs when molecules within your body lose electrons to electrically-charged molecules of oxygen in your blood stream. These electrically charged oxygen molecules are called "free radicals.” Free radicals damage our cellular DNA, which, over time, can lead to disease. The more free radicals build up in your body, the more oxidative stress you'll suffer.

Oxidation is a natural process that happens to everyone. Because it's natural, a diet rich in antioxidants is necessary to keep the levels of free radicals in your body low and maintain good health. Furthermore, simple aging, as well as certain behaviours (smoking, drinking, exposure to pollution and radiation, and infection) can increase the numbers of free radicals within our bodies.

Antioxidants benefit your health by cleaning free radicals out of your bloodstream. As mentioned, diet plays a big role but when diet alone becomes a challenge, the educated use of dietary supplements can be of benefit. Season’s @ Integrated Health Clinic is here to support the complementary use of required supplements.

Eat well...address radicals

Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. The best way to nourish your body with vitamins and minerals is to get them from whole, natural foods. The best way to become deficient in vitamins and minerals is to eat foods that are highly processed. Highly processed foods that typically include large quantities of sugar, white flour, and cheap vegetable oils fill you up and give you the illusion that you have eaten enough to satisfy your nutrient needs, even though they are sparse in nutrients.

Vitamins and minerals enable our bodies to work properly. You get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat every day. Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E, and K — dissolve in fat and can be stored in your body. The water-soluble vitamins — C and the B-complex vitamins (such as vitamins B6, B12, niacin, riboflavin, and folate) — need to dissolve in water before your body can absorb them. Because of this, your body can't store these vitamins. Any vitamin C or B that your body doesn't use as it passes through your system is lost (mostly when you pee). So you need a fresh supply of these vitamins every day.

Whereas vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Your body needs larger amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, to grow and stay healthy. Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc are called trace minerals because you only need very small amounts of them each day.

We know that day-to-day life can affect our ability to consistently consume foods that provide the necessary vitamin & mineral intake. In addition, many health issues necessitate a revised approach where higher than normal or additional intake of certain vitamins & minerals is essential. Season’s @ Integrated Health Clinic is positioned to offer you a selection of quality vitamins & minerals that you can have confidence in. Come see us to learn more.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are called "the good" microorganisms because they benefit the body, specifically the digestive system. Probiotics, available in some foods and dietary supplements, are similar to probiotics that exist naturally in your gut. Probiotic bacteria form colonies in the gut and join the existing intestinal microflora. In a healthy gut, these friendly bacteria compete with the disease-causing variety and outnumber them. The goal of consuming probiotics is to reinforce this health-promoting imbalance between the "good" bacteria and the "bad" bacteria in order to achieve optimal health. Things like medications, diet, diseases, and your environment can upset that balance.

Some probiotics may trigger an unwanted reaction such as allergic reaction, stomach upset, diarrhea and bloating. Consequently, seeking appropriate guidance from your naturopathic doctor prior to taking probiotics is important to ensuring they are administered properly.

Come visit us at Season’s or consult with your Integrated Health Clinic Naturopathic Doctor to better understand the health benefits and considerations of probiotics.

Regulating blood sugar levels is essential for good health, to maintain a healthy weight and to lower the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Much of the food we eat is converted into blood sugar, which is used by the body for energy. Problems occur, however, when we have high or low blood sugar levels. Measuring and understanding your blood sugar levels is the first step in establishing necessary goals for blood sugar control. Consulting your healthcare professional is the best approach to initiating this first step.

Once you have your plan, Season’s @ Integrated Health Clinic is here to support you in accomplishing your blood sugar control objectives.

Tinctures are liquid extracts made from fresh herbs or other natural plant material. Tinctures may also be referred to as herbal extracts or liquid herbal extracts. Tinctures are concentrated herbal preparations where the medicinal qualities of an herb are extracted into a liquid form. They are a more concentrated way of getting herbal medicines into your body to support bodily function, supply nutrients, and address certain health conditions such as colds, coughs, etc. The advantage of taking herbs in a tincture form is that they are quickly absorbed into your system and are easy to take. They provide a mechanism to get a good strong dose of herbs into your system when they are needed.

Season's @ Integrated Health Clinic offers a broad spectrum of tinctures and tincture preparations that are dispensed under the direction of the Integrated Health Clinic Naturopathic Doctors. Please come visit us to learn more.
